Q) Do I have to be a student to use the facilities?
A) No, our facilities are also open to the public.
Q) Can I use the gym on a pay as you go basis?
A) For the gym a membership is needed, however there are many of the facilities which are pay and play such as the swimming pool, fitness classes, squash and badminton.
Q) Are there changing facilities?
A) Yes we provide showers (with shower gel in the S10health and Swimming Pool changing rooms), toilets, lockers (which require a 20 pence piece which is returnable) and hair dryers within the changing rooms. There are costume spin dryers in the S10health and Swimming Pool changing rooms. We do not provide towels though.
Q) Do we have accessible changing facilities?
A) We have accessible changing facilities in the following locations:
1) Upper foyer, near the entrance to the S10health fitness centre.
2) Swimming pool near the entrance to the swimming pool; access is available through the
swimming pool changing area.
3) Sports hall lower foyer (for access to these please ask at reception)
4) An accessible toilet is available in the swimming pool corridor.
A radar key is required in order to use the accessible changing facilities and toilets and customers can ask at reception if they do not have a key.
Q) How much do I need for a locker?
A) You need a 20p coin which you get back after use.
Q) Do you have a sauna, steam, jacuzzi and pool?
A) We have a 33m heated indoor pool, poolside sauna and steam rooms. We do not have a Jacuzzi.
Q) What temperature is the water in the pool?
A) The temperature of the swimming pool is 28 degrees. Competition pools are normally 27 degrees and leisure pools are 29 degrees. The air temperature is 1 degree higher than the water temperature at 29 degrees (although in the summer months this can be higher due to the temperature outside).
Q) Can I get change from reception?
A) You can get change during a transaction but otherwise no.
Q) How and when can I book a fitness class?
A) You can book fitness classes on-line via our website. You can also ‘phone main reception on
0114 2226999 or come down to main reception to book in person.
You do not have to book classes in advance, however, classes can be booked up to 3 days in advance. Booking in advance is advisable as this guarantees your place on the class.
Please leave sufficient time if you decide to leave booking onto and paying for a class until you come to the class. Spaces may not be available at this point.
Q) How and when can I book Squash and Badminton Courts and Football Pitches?
A) You can book on-line via our website. You can also ‘phone main reception on
0114 2226999 or come down to main reception to book in person. We encourage customers to use our online bookings system, to register visit our online bookings site.
You do not have to book in advance, however, courts and pitches can be booked up to 7 days in advance. Booking in advance is advisable as this guarantees you a court/pitch.

Q) How do people cancel a booking and within what period do they have to cancel?
A) We require 24 hours’ notice to cancel a booking and this can be done by contacting our reception on 0114 2226999.
Q) How do I book on-line?
A) You will need a password and pin which you can obtain by registering on-line via our website, or by contacting Reception either in person or by phoning 0114 222 6999. Our website address is http://www.sport-sheffield.com/
Q) When can children use the swimming pool?
A) During our General Swimming sessions. Please refer to our Timetable.
All children under the age of 8 years must be supervised at all times by a responsible person.
A responsible person aged at least 16 years who is also a competent swimmer (able to swim a full length of the pool, which is 33m) should accompany all children under the age of 8 years into the swimming pool and changing areas.
Children aged 8 years or over must not use an opposite sex changing room. Please ask the receptionist for alternative arrangements.
Parents are asked to ensure that their children wear aqua nappies where appropriate to avoid any accidents.
The responsible person must go into the water with the children they are accompanying. Whilst in the pool the responsible person should maintain a close watch over the children for whom they are responsible and be in close contact with those of their children who are weak or non-swimmers.
The ratio of responsible persons to children is as follows:
Under 4 years: 1 child to 1 responsible person.
4 -7 years: 2 children to 1 responsible person.
8+ years & weak or non-swimmer: unsupervised but must not go past the “no non swimmers past this point” sign.
8+ years & competent swimmer (i.e. can swim 33m): unsupervised.
Children over the age of 8 years of age & a competent swimmer (i.e. can swim 33m), may also use the pool, without the need for supervision, during Lane Swimming sessions.
Q) What is your policy regarding the age of children during Lane Swimming sessions?
A) Children need to be over 8 years of age and be able to swim the full length of the pool, which is 33m. View our Child Admissions policy here.
Q) What are the requirements for an adult to be able to use the bouldering wall?
A) All matrix users must be experienced climbers and must sign a disclaimer form at reception before their first use.
If the customer is not experienced then they will need to attend a one hour bouldering induction which can be booked online, via our website, or at reception, either in person or by calling
Q) Can children use the bouldering wall?
A) If the junior is aged 14-17 then a parent/guardian must complete a registration form, available from Reception, the junior must register for unsupervised climbing and attend a one hour junior bouldering induction to be able to climb unsupervised.
If the junior is aged 7-17 then they must be registered by a parent and supervised at all times while in the bouldering area. Maximum 2 juniors per adult.
Q) Why do you ask for my Date of Birth when I first want to access the facilities?
A) So that your return visits run as smoothly as possible we need to create a record for you on our customer database. Once the record is created we are then able to activate your U Card (if you are a University student/member of staff) or issue you with a Sport Sheffield card (if you are a member of the public). Each time you visit we can then quickly access your customer record via your card, and as your record includes the Price Band appropriate for your transactions it will save you time at Reception.
The Date of Birth field is required so that we are able to differentiate customers with the same name who are of the same gender. We also use the Date of Birth field for data protection challenges e.g. if a customer wishes to reset their pin over the telephone. And also to purge duplicate records of customers, with slightly different spelt names.
Importantly, we make the Date of Birth field mandatory for child admission reasons. A customer’s record cannot be saved if the Date of Birth field is omitted which avoids a child’s age not being asked. This is especially relevant for the pool, gym and bouldering wall.
Please be assured that our database is secure. And we do not pass any personal details onto third parties.
Q) Can I park at Sport Sheffield?
A) The S10health car park is located on Northumberland Road, on the opposite side of the road from the Sport Sheffield drive. The S10health car park contains approximately 30 spaces. To park in the S10health car park an S10health parking permit is required. In addition, the car park operates on a Pay and Display basis at ALL hours, 7 days a week. The charge is 20p per 2 hours. Maximum stay 4 hours.
Permits for the S10health car park are only arranged by S10health staff for alumni, corporate and public S10health members. Unfortunately staff and student S10health members are unable to park in the S10health car park.
Beyond the S10health car park barrier is the University’s Category B car park. This car park has approximately 80 spaces.
fter 5pm week days and at weekends the barrier goes up. Any S10health member/customer can park in this car park, free of charge and without a permit of any kind. We now have written confirmation, from the University’s Room and Parking Services Department, that there would be no penalty for parking there during those hours without a Cat B permit.
University staff members can seek to apply for a parking permit to park at any time in the Cat B car park. University staff members must apply themselves to the University’s Room and Parking Services Department.
