University of Sheffield become winter varsity champion's once again
Friday, February 16 saw the University of Sheffield become Winter Varsity Champion's once again.
Despite the cold air, supporters came in numbers to cheer on at the side of the slope, selling out all tickets from the Union box office.
After the unprecedented success of last week’s ice hockey varsity, the Sheffield Ski Village was functioning at full capacity on Friday, The Tuesday Club DJ performing in the After Party.
However, those who were organized enough to get tickets in advance were indeed in for a treat, our own university winning all four event – a slalom in both ski and snowboard, as well as a freestyle session in both disciplines.
Also taking the Ice Hockey Varsity into account, the University of Sheffield became 2012 Varsity Champion's with the most respectable score of 4 – 1.
“It was really good, because we had a full team of five people who had raced before university, so five proper racers” Lauren Cadman, SheffSki’s race captain, said. “We were essentially hoping that our second team would beat their [Hallam] first team, which they did.”
Andy Cox, Club Sport Officer, said: “It seems very well organized, it’s relaxed and there’s a good atmosphere”
Amy Sheffield, Sheffield University Snowboard Club’s competition captain, explained the confusing art of marking the freestyler's.
“There are five criteria: technicality of trick, style, height, use of the whole slope and variation of tricks” she said. “They each score out of ten on each criteria and then you end up with a mark out of 50 – whoever gets the highest is the winner.”
There were two snowboard judges and one ski judge for the jamming session, some of them having acted as professional judges before and approved by the University of Hallam.
Our own Sports Officer Ben Baldwin said: “It’s been a good two weeks of preparation with the Hallam University Sports Officer, but all worthwhile”
“They [the competitors] do it with such a passion, breaking bones, dislocating shoulders. People don’t realize that we’re winning these things, so there will be a massive shout out on Monday. For now, it’s a big party tonight, and looking forward to Summer Varsity.”
