Lifesaving Club

Welcome to The University Of Sheffield Lifesaving Club

Lifesaving is a multidisciplinary competitive sport involving pool rescue, first aid, and speed events. The club caters to all aspects of lifesaving – so no matter whether you’re interested in competing with us, you’re looking to gain qualifications, or you just want to learn new skills, the club is for you!

Lifesaving is a sport which incorporates vital self-survival and rescue skills along with speed, fitness, and agility in the pool. We compete in a variety of exciting swimming races as well as simulated emergency response competitions across the country.

Our weekly training consists of swimming fitness, first aid skills, and pool rescue skills. All of these skills help us prepare for competitions against other university lifesaving clubs in the BULSCA League and National Student Championships.

We also offer the chance for members to complete nationally recognised qualifications, such as RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (allowing you to work as a lifeguard in all pools across the UK), the Survive & Save awards, and First Aid at Work – these qualifications look great on your CV!

As well as sport, competitions and qualifications, we also hold regular socials and charity events! Lifesaving club is a great way to meet new friends, learn important skills and to keep fit! We look forward to meeting you at our ‘Give it a Go’ sessions! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us either on Facebook, email, or via our website.

Join our Facebook group here and get in touch with one of our committee members. We will be able to give you more details so you can come along to one of our training sessions. Once you've decided you'd like to commit to our sport and our club, then you can purchase a membership!

We train three times per week; with two sessions in the pool and one dryside first aid session. Monday sessions generally involve training for competitions - from improving fitness and technique to practising speed events. Tuesday dry training is where we teach first aid and CPR - skills that aren't just used in competitions, but also if you should ever find yourself in an emergency. These sessions also involve running through simulated emergency scenarios (SERCs), similar to those at university competitions. Thursday sessions are when we cover any qualifications the club is running, such as RLSS Survive & Save Awards. This session focuses primarily on important lifesaving skills such as self-survival and pool rescue.
