Sheffield University Women’s Cricket Club

Hello and welcome to The University of Sheffield Women's Cricket Club

Welcome to The University of Sheffield Women’s Cricket Club. Playing in both indoor and outdoor leagues we aim to excel in all forms of the game. We are an inclusive club open to all abilities; with teams playing in both BUCS and local leagues and options to play hardball or softball there is a place for everyone in SUWCC. Whether you’ve never picked up a bat or have played at your local club for years, anyone is welcome to join us.

With around 25 regular members we field 2 indoor hardball teams and 1 softball team alongside our outdoor team meaning each member has the opportunity to play at a level they are comfortable with. All of our club members have access to both training and fitness sessions as a part of their membership, as well as opportunities to play in leagues at different standards. Training sessions run every week, allowing players to develop their skills aided by trained ECB coaches. With a combination of drills, nets and scenario-based training we aim to help players improve their skill set to be match ready.

Our 1st team play in both BUCS Indoor and Outdoor leagues having recently been promoted to Northern Premier for the outdoor season. Both our 1st and 2nd teams also play in the South Yorkshire Women’s Indoor Hardball League, which we also run on behalf of the Yorkshire Cricket Board. For people who are new to the sport we also offer a softball team who play in their own league usually run each Sunday. Alongside all of these opportunities throughout the year, each year we compete in Sheffield Varsity, with our 1st team winning for the past 4 years.

We host weekly socials bringing the club together as a whole, ranging from ROAR nights to pub quizzes and karaoke there is something for everyone. Bigger events are also run through the year including Christmas Meals, Varsity, Tour and our Alumni Meal getting together members both new and old.

Throughout the year we have multiple volunteering and fundraising opportunities for members to get involved with. We often volunteer at local schools, organising sessions for them to have a hand at playing cricket themselves. Although we are a smaller club, we also pride ourselves in helping the Sheffield community however we can, aiming to raise money for different charitable causes around Sheffield and in the UK. This year during lockdown we collectively ran 2700km as a club raising over £1500 for Mind, a mental health charity in the UK. We hope that this year we can go above and beyond this, raising even more money for our chosen charities.

SUWCC are proud to be an inclusive and inviting club, with no trials or initiations - everyone is welcome. We love to see beginner cricketers come and develop their skills through the time they are at university, making lifelong friends along the way. If you’re interested in joining then don’t hesitate to come along to one of our Give It A Go sessions (details of which will be available on our social media) or drop us a message/email at any time through the year to come along to a training session and see what the club is all about.

Anyone can join SUWCC, we have no trials or initiations so just talk to us at Virtual Sports Fair, turn up to one of our Give It A Go sessions or contact us on social media and one of our committee members will explain the membership process. If you’re looking to join later in the year that is perfectly fine, just send us an email and come along to one of our training sessions.

This year we are aiming to achieve a new normal in our sport, with the return of grassroots outdoor cricket this summer we hope the same will happen with indoor in the coming weeks. We are looking to grow in members and develop our intermediate side that bridges the gap between performance and development, strengthening our 2nd team. We also hope to perform well in indoor BUCS hopefully bringing home a medal, and we hope to perform admirably, holding our own in outdoor BUCS following our recent promotion.

We aim to have one fitness session and training session per week. This year our fitness sessions will be run by our First Team Captain and training will be headed by our ECB coach. Training is split into Development and Performance. Our Development sessions focus on building players skills, these sessions are open to everyone; with players ranging from beginner level who have never played before and want to try something new, to girls who have previously played at school or club level. Our Performance sessions are for players looking to solidify and improve upon their skills further - welcoming club, county and country players alongside anyone who wants to take the next step up. Sessions give players the opportunity to use the nets alongside practice fielding and use scenario-based activities to ensure players are match ready. Overall, we have a wide range of sessions open to everyone.
