How To Join/Get Involved

We run lots of weekly canoe sessions for all abilities, on our local lake and in a warm pool. All our sessions are run by the Club’s very own River Leaders who are all BCU qualified coaches. We also organise weekend trips away, in a variety of locations around the UK. These trips are suitable for both complete beginners and more experienced kayakers. We provide all the kit and training required. The best place to find out everything that is happening within the club is our Facebook group at . Here is where we organise all our sessions and it gives you the chance to talk to us and all our current members. Feel free to drop any of committee a message or email if you have a specific question or just want general information. You can also visit our website with the link above which will tell you more about ourselves, and while you are there make sure you sign up to our mailing list so we can send you a weekly email telling you everything that is going on that week with times and locations, so you never miss a thing! Be sure to follow us on Twitter and give our Facebook Page a like (links above). Come and try any of our sessions and see what you think, then if you like it then become a member and come along to more events! It is essential that you pay for membership after your first taster session, as we cannot let you participate in future session due to insurance reasons. Canoe Club boasts one of the cheapest memberships in the Union at just £30 for the whole year! This gets you kit rental for all sessions, including wetsuits and kayaks, as well social perks such as cheap drinks and food from the pubs and bars that sponsor us and a SUCC free tshirt!

Aims For The Year Ahead

Canoe Club's primary aim is getting as many people kayaking on the water and enjoying themselves. We do this in a variety of means; through recreational kayaking, be it on Sheffield’s own Crookes Lake and off the coast of Wales. Or white water kayaking for the thrill seekers, who like to kayak over waterfalls and navigate through rapids. Last but not least competitive kayaking, competing in canoe polo tournaments around the country and freestyle events such as the National Student Rodeo. This year we aim to provide exciting trips away throughout England and abroad where our members can see beautiful sites, learn lots of new skills, and have fun. This is something we have achieved consistently year on year and we will continue in the year to come. This year the Club has been overseas to the Alps on our summer trip and the year before that we went to Slovenia. Competitively, the club boasts strong canoe polo team, winning Varsity for the last four years. We aim to further develop polo within the club by opening up sessions for beginners only, in a bid to make competitive sport accessible for all. We are also developing the training sessions for our more experienced kayakers, with our new exclusive polo training pool sessions. With better training we aim to earn some BUCS (British University & Colleges Sport) points this year, and win both our Regional Leagues. We are furthering our competitive disciplines with the introduction of our Freestyle and Slalom sessions. This year we will provide training in both these disciplines with the hope to achieve yet more BUCS points at the slalom event. We also aspire to win the National Student Rodeo (NSR) – the world's biggest student kayaking event – following our successes over the recent years, taking home two brand new kayaks! We also provide weekly fitness sessions for our members to perform better on and off the water. Training involves both strength and cardio also involving our two ergo kayak machines (similar to rowing machines, but better…obviously)!
