Swimming Pool

As you are hopefully aware following a scheduled condition survey of the sports centre by the University’s surveying team, some concerns were identified with the swimming pool window frames.

Our surveyors sought recommendations from external building engineers and remedial works were carried out immediately and as you know a temporary closure of the swimming pool was required whilst the further works needed were completed.

Following these works, we requested additional investigations by the surveyors which identified some deterioration in other parts of the window frames and the current timeframe to complete remedial works is approximately five weeks from Monday 30th January.

However, as a precaution, we have been advised that we may need to close the swimming pool on occasions where particularly high winds are forecasted.

We have put in place a process of daily and weekly monitoring of the weather conditions with external engineers and we will provide further information and regular updates as soon as we can.

Unfortunately, we have just been informed that weather conditions will not be suitable on Tuesday 31st January and Wednesday 1st January for us to open the swimming pool as previously planned and therefore it will close for these 2 days.

We hope to be able to re-open the swimming pool from Thursday 2nd February, however, we will review this daily and update you as soon as possible.

You will be able to check the current pool status on this webpage as well as get an indication of the next few days.  This may change as weather updates become clearer, so please check back before you visit to ensure the pool is open.

We appreciate this is far from ideal and may cause an inconsistency in our swimming pool operating hours, but we have taken this decision based on the engineering reports, expert advice and constant monitoring process.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this situation. Our members, students, staff and visitors safety is of the utmost importance to us. If you have any queries relating to the closure please contact us via email

Thank you,

Sport Sheffield

We have a variety of lessons available to all different abilities so read on to find out more!

Swim For Fitness

Adults are able to swim 2 x 33m lengths without needing to stop and can perform all strokes to a good ability.

Sessions will include stroke technique and development, drills for all strokes, dives, turns, and distance swims.

Beginners 1

Adults may have never entered a swimming pool before, or may have lost all confidence. If the adult can move in the water, but with aid, it would be better to start in this class and then progress quickly.

Sessions will include basic buoyancy and floating, introduction to strokes with aids, safe entries and exits into the pool.

Beginners 2

Adults may have moved from Beginners 1 after completing a previous block of lessons. If adults have had lessons before and feel comfortable getting into the pool again they can join this group.

Sessions will include travel using all strokes unaided, building confidence in deeper water and progression onto full strokes (arms, legs and breathing).

Adults will be able to travel 10-20 metres without stopping but may only be able to perform one stroke.  An understanding of all strokes is helpful.

The lessons will take place at the following times:

Beginners 1 : 5-5.30 p.m Wednesday or Thursday

Beginners 2 : 5.30-6.00 p.m Wednesday or Thursday

Improvers : 7- 7.30 p.m Wednesday or 6-6.30 p.m Thursday

Swim for Fitness: 7.30-8.30 p.m Wednesday only

Front Crawl Masterclass: 7.30- 8 p.m Thursday
